Designing in Playbook Studio
Creating a new playbook template
From the Create button to your first saved draft — what a brand-new template starts with and how to get it persisted.
Every template starts the same way: click Create Playbook and you'll land on a canvas containing a single phase and a single session.
From there, add the basic details, shape the structure, and save your first draft.
This guide covers the first few minutes of creating a template. More advanced topics such as phases, sessions, agendas, and pre-work are covered elsewhere in the Studio documentation.
What a new template includes
New templates start with a basic structure so you can begin building immediately.
One phase
A starting phase that can be renamed, expanded, or replaced.
One session
A starting session inside the phase. Additional sessions can be added as needed.
Playbook properties
Configure the title, description, duration, and other template settings.
Canvas controls
Tools for editing, saving, annotating, and publishing your template.
Save and Publish
Saving and publishing serve different purposes.
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Save draft | Saves your work and keeps the template in Draft status. |
| Publish | Makes the template available for use when creating playbooks. |
When you first create a template, you'll save it as a draft. Once you're ready to make it available to others, publish it.

Tips
Save regularly. Unsaved changes can be lost if you close or refresh the browser before saving.
Start with the title and duration. These two fields make it much easier to identify and organise templates later.
Don't worry about getting everything right on the first pass. Most templates evolve through several draft iterations before they're published.
