Building Pre-work templates

Lay out the prep tasks participants will complete before the session — add, configure, reorder, save.

The Pre-work template builder is where you design the tasks participants complete before a session.

Use it to collect responses, share materials, gather feedback, and help participants arrive prepared.

Open the builder from a session's Prep tab in the Session property panel.

How pre-work works

Pre-work is made up of a sequence of tasks.

Participants complete tasks in order, and their responses are available to facilitators when the session runs.

You can reorder tasks at any time using drag and drop.

Adding tasks

Click Add task to choose a task type.

Common task categories include:

Category Examples
Response collection Open text, contact information
Opinion Multiple choice, scales, picture choice
Prioritisation Ranking and sorting exercises
Media review Videos, documents, embeds
Media creation Video responses, file uploads
Structure Instructions and section dividers

Each task type has its own configuration options. For a full reference, see Pre-work task types.

Building effective pre-work

A good pre-work flow usually combines a few different task types.

For example:

  1. A simple opening question.
  2. A short reflection or survey.
  3. Supporting material to review.
  4. A final question to capture thoughts or priorities.

Preview your pre-work before publishing to make sure instructions are clear and the flow feels natural.

Tips

Keep it focused. Participants are more likely to complete short, purposeful pre-work than long questionnaires.

Mix task types. Combining questions, media, and interactive tasks creates a more engaging experience.

Start simple. An easy first task helps participants build momentum.
